A Night at the Palace

A novel by F. David Peat set in Liverpool just after World War II. It was a period of poverty and petty crime. Yet Harold Coke feels that he lives outside such a sorded world. His life, with his wife and child, is a modest one whose high points consist of trips to the local library, flights of the fantasy, and arguments his his friend Threlfall. Yet he is shortly to be drawn into a murder trial - the killing of a cinema manager by a young thug called Cullen. Likewise his friend Threlfall finds himself harbouring Cullen's girlfriend Marge.
